The Australian Londoners (1965)
Shot on two Bolex H16 cameras (£74 & £110), a Uher tape recorder (£25), two photoflood lights (£12) and short-end 16mm film stock (£84)
Famous and not so famous Australians living in London in the summer of 1965 say why they left home.
Narrated by Australian TV personality Rolf Harris, the program features:
Dame Joan Sutherland, Sir Robert Helpmann, Jack Brabham, Brett Whiteley, Scobie Breasley, Keith Michell, Barry Humphries, Brett Whitely, Radio Caroline DJs, Jon Bannenberg, Ken Warren, Russell Braddon, June Bronhill and numerous Aussie dentists.
The programme was broadcast in Australia on 28th November 1965 on TCN Channel 9. It proved controversial - Australians in the programme said they preferred living in London, which provoked something of an outcry back home.
Station owner, Sir Frank Packer missed the original Sunday 10 p.m. broadcast. The programme was repeated on Wednesday night at 9 p.m. on his demand. Sir Frank missed it again and the documentary was repeated a third time on Friday at 8 p.m.! The official story was REPEATED BY PUBLIC DEMAND. Now the truth can be told. No one knows whether Sir Frank ever saw the program. Rumor has it that he missed it again.
